Aerospace and defense supplier opportunities in Melbourne, Florida

Melbourne is the defense electronics and aircraft end of the Space Coast: L3Harris has its headquarters here, Northrop Grumman runs a large aircraft engineering campus beside the airport, and Embraer assembles business jets on the field. Shops that want this work need AS9100 level discipline, clean documentation and, for defense programs, readiness to handle controlled data.

The three big buyers in Melbourne

Three companies set the tone for supplier demand in Melbourne, and each one buys from a different kind of shop.

L3Harris Technologies

L3Harris lists its corporate headquarters at 1025 W. NASA Boulevard in Melbourne. The company says it has been based in Melbourne since 1978 and is the only major aerospace and defense company headquartered in Florida, and the county EDC calls it the area's largest aerospace employer. Its work centers on communications, electronic systems and space payloads, which means demand for precision machined housings, chassis, RF and microwave structures, harnesses and circuit card assemblies.

Northrop Grumman

Northrop Grumman's Melbourne campus sits next to the airport. In August 2026 the company celebrated a new 300,000 square foot engineering building there with 17 secure labs for advanced aircraft design and room for more than 1,200 additional engineers. The campus already had about 5,000 people and two million square feet of space. The site's history explains the scale: in 2013 Northrop moved E-2 Hawkeye engineering work to Melbourne from Bethpage, New York, and in 2016 the city approved a campus expansion tied to the B-21 Raider program.

Embraer

Embraer opened its first U.S. final assembly plant at the Melbourne airport in February 2011 to build Phenom business jets, then added a Legacy 450 and 500 line in 2016. Its Engineering and Technology Center opened beside the assembly plant in September 2014, a 75,000 square foot building that was Embraer's first engineering center outside Brazil. Business jet work pulls interior components, sheet metal, composite trim, ground equipment and tooling.

The airport is the industrial address

Most of this activity sits on or around Melbourne Orlando International Airport (MLB). If you see older references to Orlando Melbourne International Airport, that was the name from 2015 until a 2021 settlement with Orlando International Airport, after which the Melbourne Airport Authority agreed to switch to Melbourne Orlando International.

For a supplier this matters in two ways. First, the primes' receiving docks, engineering buildings and assembly hangars are clustered, so a shop in south Brevard can visit several buyers in one afternoon. Second, airport land keeps attracting new aerospace projects, so the buyer list changes. Watch airport authority and EDC announcements rather than relying on a tenant list from a few years ago.

What Melbourne buyers flow down to suppliers

Melbourne work is mostly defense and aircraft production, so expect the full set of aerospace requirements on the purchase order, not just a drawing.

  • Quality system. AS9100 is the normal expectation for production suppliers. A shop without it may still get prototype or tooling work, but production usually requires it. See AS9100 cost and timeline.
  • First article inspection to AS9102, certificates of conformance, and material certs traceable to the mill.
  • Workmanship standards for electronics: IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001 for circuit card assemblies, IPC/WHMA-A-620 for cable and harness work. See electronics and harness shops.
  • Controlled data. Defense drawings often carry export control markings or CUI. That brings ITAR registration if you manufacture defense articles, and CMMC if you store or process CUI. See CMMC levels.
  • Special processes such as anodize, plating, heat treat and NDT, usually from approved sources only.

Business jet work for Embraer follows aviation quality rules rather than defense data rules, which can make it a more approachable first target for a shop that has AS9100 but is not ready for CMMC.

Engineering and trade talent in south Brevard

Hiring is the constraint most Melbourne shops mention, and the local schools are aimed squarely at it.

  • Florida Institute of Technology is in Melbourne and offers an aerospace engineering degree. Its L3Harris Student Design Center, opened in 2015 with a gift from what was then Harris Corporation, gives students time on a CNC mill, CNC router, water jet and laser cutters, so new graduates often know their way around a shop floor.
  • Eastern Florida State College received state funding in 2022 for a Center for Innovative Technology Education on its Melbourne campus, and runs the county's Aerospace Technology degree from its Cocoa campus.
  • CareerSource Brevard handles hiring events, job postings and training reimbursement programs for local employers.

A practical first move for a Melbourne shop

Do not start by cold calling the prime. Start with the suppliers who already ship to it. The large primes buy many machined and electronic parts through tier-one and tier-two suppliers, and those companies need overflow capacity and quick turn help more often than the primes do. Ask what they outsource, what their supplier survey looks like, and which special processes they need approved.

Next, decide how far into controlled data you want to go. A shop that is ready for CUI and ITAR can quote far more of the Melbourne market. A shop that is not can still do well on commercial aircraft, tooling and ground equipment.

For the wider county, see the Space Coast page. For statewide programs, see the Florida page. For the general path, see the supplier hub.

Join as a Melbourne supplier

If your shop is in south Brevard and does machining, sheet metal, harness, circuit card or process work, sign up free at /suppliers/. Aerospace Sourcing matches Space Coast aerospace and defense requests to qualified suppliers, and a local shop can turn work and resolve questions faster than one across the country.

We review every signup and contact you when a job fits. We do not promise RFQ volume. Every supplier signs a flow-down NDA before seeing files, and export controlled data never goes through the website.

Questions

Can a small shop sell directly to L3Harris or Northrop Grumman?

It is possible but slow for a new shop. Large primes run formal supplier qualification, with surveys, quality system review, cyber questions and often a site visit, and they prefer suppliers with a delivery record. Many small shops start by supporting the primes' existing tier-one and tier-two suppliers, building a record, then applying to the prime's approved supplier list with that history behind them.

Do I need CMMC to work for Melbourne defense companies?

Only if you will store, process or transmit Controlled Unclassified Information, or Federal Contract Information under a DoD contract. Many defense drawings are CUI, so production suppliers to defense programs usually need CMMC Level 2 once it is in their contract. Shops doing commercial aircraft work, such as business jet parts, generally do not. Ask the buyer how its drawings are marked.

What is the right name for the Melbourne airport?

The current name is Melbourne Orlando International Airport, with the code MLB. From 2015 it was branded Orlando Melbourne International Airport. After a lawsuit from the operator of Orlando International Airport, the two airports settled in 2021 and Melbourne agreed to change its name and branding. Older documents and maps may still use the earlier name.

What does Embraer do in Melbourne?

Embraer assembles business jets at the Melbourne airport. Its plant opened in 2011 for the Phenom line, and a Legacy 450 and 500 line was added in 2016. Embraer also runs an Engineering and Technology Center next to the plant, opened in 2014, which covers engineering work across its business jet, airline and defense segments.
